By applying the newly aquired knoqledge I have received in regards to presentation design, I have redesigned My Assignment 2 Powerpoint presentation. I have used Play more in the slides, and kept backgrounds conscise in order to represent Design, although design can sometimes go unnoticed. At least it is there, and it really adds to the slideshow, because the black background contrasts the white writing.

This first image is a remote control. It is a product that is found in everyday surroundings which was created in order to reduce kinematic load. It satisfies the principle of performance load by reducing the degree of physical activity it takes one to change the channels or volume on their television set. “General strategies for reducing kinematic load include reducing the number of steps required to complete tasks, minimizing range of motion and travel distances, and automating repetitive tasks.” (Lidwell, Holden & Butler, 2003, p. 148).

The next image is an Apple iPhone, which is a telephone that has been created to satisfy Performance load. It is an easy to use phone which is a touch screen, and so it minimises the kinematic load it would take one to push the buttons. Now you can slide through menus rather than clicking and clicking in order to get to where you want. It also reduces the amount of cognitive load one requires, which is the amount of mental activity it takes to accomplish a goal, according to Lidwell, Holden and Butler. (2003, p. 148). The iPhone reduces cognitive load by eliminating unnecessary information and buttons from the phone and it chunks information that is to be remembered.

This is an automated gear stick for a car. The automatic car is an everyday surrounding which has been created in order to reduce kinematic load: the degree of physical activity it takes to accomplish a goal. This product satisfies the design principle of Performance load by decreasing the amount of physical force it takes to navigate gears. The automatic gear stick changes the gears for you, so you don’t have to and driving is made easier. The reduction of kinematic load automates repetitive tasks, and changing gears is one of these tasks.

Activity 1 requires snapshots of each type of credibility.

The first type of credibility is presumed. Presumed credibility relates to general assumptions that are in the mind of the perceiver. This is meaning that the perceiver makes assumptions about the credibility of a website, and according to www.globalspec.com, websites that end in .org are generally presumed credible as they commonly represent non-profit organisations. (“Presumed credibility,” 1999).

The Red Cross is a non-profit organisations that aids in helping those in need. It provides a lot of information in regards to donating blood, working with the Red Cross, what the Red Cross do, making a difference, and it also provides reputable contact information, links and localities. Viewers make assumptions about the credibility of this website because of the name, the reputation of the company and the credibility of it is based on assumptions about the company in the users mind.

(www.redcross.org, 2009)

Then there is surface credibility, which is the initial experience that someone gets from looking at a website. It’s the surface preview one receives. Surface credibility is based on first impressions (“Presumed credibility, 1999) and a site that looks professionally designed represents this. Here is an example.

Heyder and Shears is a catering company with a professionally designed web site that upon first appearance intrigues the viewer and creates a good initial preview. It gives off a good first impression and reflects professionalism and sophistication.

(www.heyderandshears.com, 2009).

Next is reputed credibility, which consists of third party endorsements. Reputed credibility occurs when a website is referred by someone, via word of mouth, for example, or via links. “Third party endorsements, especially from respected sources, boost perceptions of credibility of computing technology.” (Foggs, 2003, p. 136).

This website is an example of a website which holds reputed credibility. It won Design Agency of the year in 2008 and is nominated again for 2009, which makes the site appear credible via third party endorsements like nominations. Here is a screen shot.

(www.f-i.com, 2009).

The fourth type of credibility is the one which is hardest to achieve: earned credibility. This is the firsthand experience one receives that extends over time. (2003, p. 133). “When earned credibility is high, people are likely to spend more time at the site, visit it more often, make repeated purchases (if it is an e-commerce site), tell others about it, and be open to persuasion techniques the site uses.” (Foggs, 2003, p. 170). It is the most powerful of the credibilities. According to www.slideshare.net, a quick response to a customers questions and queries affects earned credibility. (“Earned credibility”, 2009).

Bamboozle is a bamboo flooring company, and their website has earned credibility thanks to links to FAQs as well as to reputable links, contact information, a page for quote requests and information, and their feedback time is efficient and quick.

People’s perceptions of non-profit organisations has changed from 1999 to 2002. This is according to the Stanford Web Credibility studies. (2003, p. 164). Setting up a non-profit organisation is deemed easy today, and so the values from 1999 to 2002 have decreased in what people consider credible.

Non-profit organisations are considered to be more trustworthy because they are not seeking commercial gain, but this is not necessarily a fact. (Foggs, 2003, p. 164). Issues that may affect a users perceived credibility of web sites in the future are as follows:

- site is hard to distinguish between ads and content
- links are not credible
- unprofessional design
- rare update of new content
- does not provide links to competitors sites
- site requires a paid subscription

As a non-profit organisation, it is important to meet viewers requirements, like having reputable links to competitors pages, having updates of new content, and being professional, because you want people looking at your content. The content needs to be reputable and it’s nice to do the right thing by your viewers.

“As a non-profit organisation, CHG is one of the few in the country to serve low-income recipients of government-funded medical care. As do commercial HMO’s, CHG charges a monthly fee for each member and then contracts with doctors, hospitals, and other health-care professionals to provide the actual medical services members require. The difference is that CHG’s member fees are paid by the government.” (Bovee & Thill, 2000, p. 122).

This quote is extracted from Business communication today. It depicts how CHG as a non-profit organisation are not doing anything for personal gain, as the member fees are paid by the government. This gives customers or viewers a sense of security with CHG, and adds credibility to CHG. Other issues that may affect a users’ perceived web credibility are as follows:

- lack of security
- needs for fulfilled quickly
- limitations within a browser window or with information
- lack of response to customer
- cost or subscription or services
- difficult to navigate

According to Learning theories and the design of e-learning environments, non-profit web sites should make sure they market their site and maintain it, administrate it, annoince relevant news on the site, make sure it has good visual appeal, be consistent with page layouts, and plan the production. (Gillani, 2003, pp.248-251). If an organisation want to achieve credibility, and maintain credibility, unlike the studies show, then they should follow these steps. Otherwise, a users’ perceived credibility for web sites is doing to diminish in the future.

In our learning portfolio activities, it is stated that Wikipedia is not acceptable as a resource for our studies. Upon research over the years, I have discovered that Wikipedia is a website which provides us with information, but it can be altered by anyone. Hence, Wikipedia lacks credibility. In Business communication today, Bovee and Thill state that “most disorganized communication suffers from problems with content, grouping, or sequence.” (2000, p. 124). They say to include only information that is related to the suject and purpose, (p.125) and Wikipedia doesn’t always do this.

Credibility involves trustworthiness and perceived expertise, according to Foggs, (2003, p. 123) and Wikipedia lacks both of these. There is no evidence that the author or authors of Wikipedia have any authority over the field they are discussing or whether they are even part of anyorganisation. (“Evaluating web credibility”, 1998). “A resource that is credible is one which shows evidence of authenticity, reliability and believability.” (“Credibility and web evaluation,” 2002). Wikipedia as an information source does not show evidence of any of these things, which is why it is not accepted as any kind of resource for our learning portfolio studies. It is not a reccommended source for any form of research because of the credibility it lacks.

As a student, I find website credibility important. Evaluating web credibility is something that as students is essential, as a sight needs to be trustworthy. Julian Santoyo, chief financial officer for CHG says that to maintain his credibility, he “never stretches facts.” (Bovee & Thill, 2000, p. 123). Truthfulness and relevent information aid in creating a credible site, and trustworthiness and expertise equal a perception of credibility, according to Persuasive Technology: using computers to change what we think and do. (Foggs, pp 122-125).

As students, it’s important to evaluate the credibility of a website when conducting research, as a lot of information put on the internet is irrelevent. “The web is much more than a mere presentation tool.” (Gillani, 2003, p.9). A lot of the time, information is dressed up with graphics and animation, according to Gillani, and this doesn’t make a site more credible. It is important for students to judge the credibility of a site because they want to receive useful and beneficial information, not exaggerated facts. Reputable links, information, and contact details contribute to a credible site.

According to Foggs, when both trustworthiness and expertise are present, a site is viewed as more credible. (2003, p. 156). ”During any communication event, the source’s credibility may be reevaluated and either heightened or lowered in the receiver’s mind.” (Burgoon, Hunsaker & Dawson, 1994, p.47). We could be effected as students if we conducted research within a site that wasn’t credible, due to disreputable links, false or exaggerated information, or out of date statistics and information. This would then effect our research and grades, and no student wants this.
